I write with regard to your com...Dear Mr. Coronel:

I write with regard to your comment on our most recent blogpost.

We offer a comment space because we welcome constructive, analytic reflections on the analyses, interpretations and, yes, opinions, put forth in the AULA blog. We have no interest in seeing the intellectually ambitious blog that we have nurtured become a space for ideological polemics or for inflammatory rhetoric (e.g. your reference to “civilized” academics strikes me as well out of bounds). Nor do we see it as a venue for commentators to invite themselves to American University’s campus to take part in forums, or for that matter debates, that presumably I personally would have the privilege of organizing in my ample free time. No thanks.

Below I indicate the portion of your intervention that I am willing to post on our comments section, noting in track changes the excerpts that strike me as absolutely off limits.

I will post this revised version only if you give a green light, and I will do so not because I think that your comments as stated reflect well on your intellect – the case could be made more convincingly with data, which are there to support your position if you took the time to assemble them and communicate them concisely -- but because I wish to be as open as possible, in keeping with the Center’s commitment to free debate among analysts of sharply differing views.
To be aired in the blog and/or its comments section, a minimum condition is that authors must express their views cordially and constructively. We also strive for theoretical and empirical rigor, particularly from authors of blogposts. But our standards for this are more stringent for posts than they are for comments, as a result of which I expect that there may be space for you to continue to publish comments on this and future posts on the blog.
Your comment, with my edits, is below:

START COMMENT

Starting with the title, this piece by Mr. McCarthy does not get it. There have been no sanctions against Venezuela. There have been sanctions against Venezuelans guilty of violations of human rights, individuals who have abused their power to kill, oppress, imprison and torture Venezuelans protesting and exercising their constitutional rights. START DELETE--Surely, an university blog, run by civilized academics, could see this difference. Or is ideology so strong that blinds?--END DELETE
START DELETE--I would be willing to debate this issue (s) with AULA in front of AU students. I think they have a right to know the other side of the story and make up their minds as to what is happening in Venezuela.--END DELETE In the last two months the Venezuelan regime has been openly criticized by the U.N., by the European Parliament, by the group of former Latin American presidents. Even Jose Mujica, a man who has recieved many favor$ from Venezuela has recently sad that Leopoldo Lopez's prison is a disgrace.
Venezuela, Sir, is a rogue state.
START DELETE--I have degrees from the University of Tulsa, where I am a Distinguished Alumnus, from the Caracas Central University, from Johns Hopkins (SAIS) and was a Fellow at Harvard University, I have enough academic credentials to debate at AU.--END DELETE

END QUOTE

I am perfectly happy not to post your comment, but if you would like us to post a version, something along the lines of what I propose above would be acceptable, and I hope that you will keep that in mind regarding future comments.

All the best,
Eric Hershberg, CLALSAU CLALShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16940716003682755364noreply@blogger.com
