******* THE CRIME: The money Chavez hides.
In his frecuent television appearances Hugo Chavez repeats incessantly that the global financial/economic crisis will not touch Venezuela because, (1), a $55 oil barrel will be enough for “his”purposes” and, (2) because he has “plenty”of money put away in unspecified foreign funds.
It is sad but not surprsing that these statements, especially the second one, have not raised any public reaction from Venezuelans. It would seem that chavistas and opposition alike are made, after all, of the same clay. They do not seem to give a damn if the country is falling to pieces, as long as they are doing OK as individuals.
No one, as far as I know, has asked the questions: Is it legal for Chavez to have money put away in unspecified banks abroad? Is it legal for Chavez to hide from the Venezuelan people the amounts and the locations of these monies? How can a person, especially the president, say such a thing as if it was a normal procedure, without anyone telling him that he is in violation of the most elementary democratic ingredients: accountability and tranparency, that he cannot be legitimate acting in this manner?
Although there does not seem to be anyone in Venezuela, at this time, man or woman, who can stand up to Chavez and tell him to his face he is a crook, that is exactly what he is. I am prepared to tell him that, and prove it, if he was willing to face me or, for that matter, anyone belonging to the opposition. Chavez is not only a crook, he is a coward.

CHAVEZ: WHERE IS THE MONEY THAT BELONGS TO US, THE MONEY THAT YOU HAVE PUT AWAY? IN HONG KONG? IN CHINA? IN PANAMA? IN LONDON? IN IRAN? IN CUBA? IN A COMBINATION OF THESE PLACES? THERE ARE $40 BILLION THAT BELONG TO US PUT AWAY BY YOU AND YOUR DESPICABLE GANG OF GANGSTERS. WHERE IS THAT MONEY?
