In the city of Los Teques, some 25 miles west of the capital, two active members of the Venezuelan army and two civilians put together an improvised operation to rob citizens of their belongings. The operation was temporarily successful since the military were armed with their AK 103 rifles, Kalashnikov, and abundant ammunition (100,000 rifles were bought by Chavez from the Russians 3 years ago), but ran into problems when the local Los Teques police (in the hands of the opposition) found them distributing the spoils. Several cell phones; wallets and a couple of laptops were recovered.
This type of criminal activity is more and more frequent in Venezuela. The criminals are members of the Venezuelan armed forces or of the local, "revolutionary" police forces. Venezuelan citizens do not have almost anyone to call for help! In Venezuela almost 14,000 persons are murdered every year, more than in Iraq or Afghanistan.
