***El modelo Cubano no funciona/The Cuban model does not work.
Accompanied by Julia Sweig, a U.S. fellow traveler of the Cuban and Venezuelan dictatorships who served as interpreter, journalist Jeffrey Goldberg recently interviewed Fidel Castro for The Atlantic Monthly, (http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2010/09/fidel-cuban-model-doesnt-even-work-for-us-anymore/62602/ )
I asked him if he believed the Cuban model was still something worth exporting.
"The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore," he said.
This struck me as the mother of all Emily Litella moments. Did the leader of the Revolution just say, in essence, "Never mind"?
I asked Julia to interpret this stunning statement for me. She said, "He wasn't rejecting the ideas of the Revolution. I took it to be an acknowledgment that under 'the Cuban model' the state has much too big a role in the economic life of the country.". The interview contained a very important moment.
Being who she is, the female equivalent of Wayne Smith, Julia Sweig tried to put a spin on the answer but it is clear that Castro is now coming back on his tracks after 50 years of criminal treatment of the Cuban people. Now he loves jews, he loves dolphins, he feels the Cuban model does not even work for Cubans. It never did! It took him 50 years to realize it. 50 years of suffering for the Cuban people are dismissed with a simple statemente, while having a glass of wine.
This is similar to Hitler saying that he was sorry about the Holocaust or Stalin confessing to the murder of his wife.
Now, what will Fidel’s pupil say? Hugo Chavez has been desperately trying to build another Cuba in Venezuela. Now his idol tells the world that the model does not work for export, it does not even work in Cuba. Eleven years gone to waste for Chavez! And much suffering for the Venezuelan people.
